How can I safely upgrade my UGREEN DXP2800 from 2×4TB to 2×12TB RAID 1 without data loss?

Hey everyone,

I’m currently using a UGREEN DXP2800 NAS with two 4TB drives in a RAID 1 setup. Now I want to upgrade to two 12TB drives, also in RAID 1, and ideally do this without any data loss.

I’ve already made a manual backup by copying all files to an external drive (drag & drop).

What’s the safest way to upgrade to the 12TB drives while preserving the RAID 1 setup and my data?

Should I try swapping the drives one by one and let the RAID rebuild? Or is it better to just do a clean setup with the 12TB drives and restore from the backup?

Any advice or experiences with this specific NAS would be much appreciated!

Hello and welcome!

1.) Remove disk 1, insert the new 12 TB drive.

2.) Wait for the RAID to rebuild.

3.) Remove and replace the second disk.

4.) Wait for the RAID to rebuild.

5.) Increase the volume.

Weil überall lese, das davon abgeraten wird und man am besten einen neuen Pool erdtellen soll. Aber hab darauf keine Lust weil meine VM und Jellyfin als docker sonst weg wären oder?

I keep reading that it’s strongly discouraged to do a disk swap and that it’s best to create a new storage pool instead. But honestly, I don’t feel like doing that because I’d lose my VM and my Jellyfin Docker setup, right?

Mike0185, can you confirm whether to power down or not (hot swap) with each disk swap? There's posts elsewhere, some say to leave power on and hot swap, others say to power down. I'm about to upgrade mine to larger drives as well. Thank you.

Officially the UGREEN NAS supports hot-swap, but in practice some users have had issues where the new drive wasn’t detected properly or the rebuild got stuck.

So unless you’re replacing a failed drive in a running array, it’s safer to power down, swap the disk, and boot back up.

So in my case the support stated that HDDs in the DXP2800 aren’t hot swappable.

I also don’t recommend using HotSwap. I've never done that with Synology DS, even though I have/had all HotSwap capability.

Upps, jetzt hab ich wohl geschlafen. Meinte eigentlich Hot-Swap. Hab's auch geändert, aber du wohl noch nicht.

is it possible to swap HDD one by one to increase the data storage capacity while keeping the data, and afterward change the volume from raid0 to raid5 ( and keeping the data) ?

or do i need to wipe the existing volume and create a new one from scratch and reimporting all my data ?
