SSD Cache DXP4800 Plus

  • Hi,

I received by NAS and added 2 SSDs (1TB) in raid 1 configuration - no issue here.

However, I also added 2 NVME Samsung 990 M2 to use as a cache but it will not allow this - there is no option to add it.

    Any ideas?

  • I don´t use the NVMEs as a Cache.

But follow the Numbers on my Screenshoot, I´m not sure but you will find it than.

  • Think it might be that my main disks are SSD and would need to add a normal HDD to enable the cache option to be shown. Unfortunately I don't have any here at the moment to try!

  • If you use SATA SSDs, a cache is useless anyway.

Even with built-in HDDs, the cache doesn't really do much.

The cache only becomes really effective when lots of people are constantly accessing the same files together.

It makes much more sense to use NVMEs as volumes. Install all apps, Docker, and VMM on the NVME volume.

Install as much RAM as possible as cache. Linux likes to use RAM as cache. ;)

  • Was thinking of going down that route!

Have ordered 64 GB of RAM to max it out and will order some more SSDs, as I have 3 other Synology NAS here with around 30TB each of storage so that should suffice for storage!

  • I recommend Kingston RAM, Have a Look to the Compatibility List for Kingston on DXP4800+, or have a look to my Signature (under the Post -> Spoiler) That one works nearly for one Year perfect, had never Trouble with it.
